The Darlene 3 Fire, which threatened neighborhoods in La Pine late last week, is a well-timed reminder ahead of Fourth of July just how easily an accidental fire can grow into a beast that threatens homes and lives.
Fireworks pose a serious risk during fire season, especially as the beginning of July can bring with it some of the hottest days of the year. Central Oregon cities urge residents to be cautious with fireworks and understand what fireworks are allowed in specific places.
Bend
The sale, possession and use of fireworks within Bend city limits is prohibited after the Bend City Council unanimously approved a ban in 2021. Firework alternatives, such as smoke bombs, wire core sparklers, snakes and party poppers, are allowed.
Any fireworks discharged outside city limits must be legal in Oregon. No fireworks that explode, eject balls of fire, fly into the air or travel more than 6 feet along the ground are legal in Oregon, and fireworks purchased elsewhere may not be brought into Bend.
Violations can be as much as $2,500 from the Oregon State Fire Marshal, and up to $750 from the city. Costs for damage and injury may also apply.
Sheila Miller, spokesperson for the Bend Police Department, said there have been 16 complaints placed since June 22 regarding the illegal use of fireworks. That number is pretty typical, she said, and the department expects the number to ramp up as we get closer to Thursday.
In 2023, Bend Police received at least 132 complaints about fireworks from June 23 through July 5. Only one person was cited for illegal fireworks though: a man who allegedly showed off his $1,000 illegal firework stash on Facebook and TikTok videos.
To submit a complaint, email fireworks@bendoregon.gov. Submitting a complaint to this email does not trigger police response, but will help authorities compile information on violations. Do not submit complaints to 911 or emergency services unless life or property are immediately in danger. Otherwise, fireworks-related calls are considered nonemergency.
RedmondIn Redmond, fireworks approved by the Oregon are permitted. However, use of illegal fireworks within city limits may result in a fine of $500. Repeat offenders could receive up to six months of jail time and a fine of up to $2,500.
All fireworks are prohibited within the Dry Canyon Park System in Redmond, which runs from Quartz Avenue to Spruce Avenue.
Around the state
In the state of Oregon, legal fireworks include but are not limited to, novelty devices, wheels, flitter sparklers, fountains, smoke devices and ground spinners. Illegal fireworks include sky landers, missiles, rockets, firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-80s, Roman candles and bottle rockets.
Fireworks may only be purchased at Oregon-permitted retailers between June 23 and July 6. Any fireworks purchased out-of-state cannot be brought into Oregon.
All fireworks are prohibited at Oregon State Parks, beaches, campgrounds and on state or federal forestlands.
Where to see legal fireworks showsEvery year, one of Central Oregon’s biggest Fourth of July fireworks displays takes place atop Pilot Butte in Bend. The fireworks show can be seen from anywhere in Bend where the butte is visible, with popular viewing locations at Providence Park and Ponderosa Park. The show begins at 10 p.m. and lasts approximately 20 minutes.
The road to the top of Pilot Butte is closed this week in preparation for the show, and Bend Fire & Rescue firefighters prepare the butte in advance and have crews stationed during the show in case of fire. In Redmond, a fireworks display takes place at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center. The show begins at 10 p.m.
