A man driving a van through Sisters crashed into a 72-year-old woman crossing the street Tuesday evening.
The woman and her husband, who are from Beaverton, were crossing E. Cascade Avenue at N. Spruce Street near the heart of Sisters around 6:25 p.m. Tuesday when a 2015 Dodge Ram Pro Master City van struck the woman, Lt. Chad Davis, a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, said in a news release. The woman’s husband was carrying an orange pedestrian flag, which is a safety measure used at busy intersections like Cascade Avenue, Davis said.
When deputies and Black Butte Ranch Police officers responded, they found the woman, who was conscious and alert, had been seriously injured. She was flown to St. Charles Bend. Davis said her condition improved as the night went on.
Deputies cited the driver, Todd Beckwith, 56, of La Pine, for failing to stop or remain stopped for a pedestrian, careless driving and uninsured driving.
“He was attempting, or had intended, to make a left hand turn onto South Spruce and there was a vehicle kind of blocking, and so at the last minute he decided to continue westbound,†Davis told The ÅÝֱܽ²¥.
Davis estimated Beckwith was driving roughly between 20-25 mph.
