Sisters Skatepark

Skateboarders line the pool coping of Sisters Skatepark’s largest bowl during a 2021 fundraising event. The DIY park was designed and built by skaters, who also raised funds for it.

Some heated words were exchanged April 21 in a preventable user conflict at Sisters Skatepark. The mother of two young kids on scooters was upset after a couple of skaters corrected her kids, who were perching on the coping, dropping into bowls at random and generally going against the flow of things. (Note: I was not the skater who spoke to the kids or their mom, and was only within earshot part of the time.)

As more and more non-skateboarders find their way onto the inviting banks, ramps, rails, ledges and bowls that skateparks, which were designed and built for skateboarding, there is often an accompanying lack of awareness, even apathy, about how to go with the flow and avoid such conflicts.

skateparks are not for small kids and their scooters. It's dangerous and they will get hurt. There's plenty of scooting tobe had at a flat park.

Thanks for this. As the parent of a scooter kid, I've enjoyed the atmosphere at Bend skate parks: generally tolerant and friendly. In any community, the older and more experienced have implied responsibility toward youngers. Be first, patient and friendly. It really is kind of a playground, and your adult agendas are not of a higher priority than kids who are learning how to skate and behave at a park. Create a welcoming atmosphere. If you witness less than ideal behavior on the part of kids, try to find the parent (hey, is your mom or dad here?) and politely approach and offer suggestions, rather than directly correcting the kids. Use your words, and use them kindly. For goodness sake, do not impose your adult size in asserting right of way over kids. I grew up in Miami too. Back in my skating days, it was quarter pipes made out of stolen lumber, and loading docks. We are lucky to have these community parks for all of us to enjoy! Finally, parents, I'd like to put in a plug for my friend Jacob Bailey, and his inimitable Truck Stop Action Sports (https://www.instagram.com/truckstopactionsports/). They run scooter camps at the best skate park in the area, Old Pondy! And teach kids how to skate and how to behave properly at the park. Highly recommended.
