Construction of the new Costco on the Bend’s north side may be more than a month behind schedule, bringing the company’s late-August opening date into question.
The ÅÝֱܽ²¥ first observed construction of the new building early in June. However, John Ellingsen, director of international development for Costco, told the Boyd Acres Neighborhood Association in February that, “We expect our building to go vertical on May 4 … and we are currently on schedule for an end of August opening.â€

Costco has declined to comment on the project and any associated delays. The company maintains that no additional information about the project will be released until the company posts the project on its list of coming soon, about two to three months before opening.
The site currently lists new projects through October, but does not list the Costco under construction in Bend near U.S. Highway 20 near Robal Lane.
Once construction is complete, it will take 20 days to stock and prepare the store, Ellingsen said. Residents can also expect a Costco gas station, a Costco car wash and a new road that extends from Robal Lane to Cooley Road that will be called Costco Drive.

While the new Costco is going to save me a ton of money I’m not thrilled about it. No more stopping in for a cheap frozen coffee and a hotdog or pizza on my way to or from my home on the east side, which I’ll miss. But that means no more giant-sized “bargain†food items or inexpensive appliances or clothing I didn’t know I wanted until I saw them in someone else’s cart. The long drive (only 10 miles more from where I am now) in terms of the ever-decreasing speed limits, ever-increasing traffic control devices, never-ending construction delays, and incessant increase of population which is overextending our infrastructure, turns the trip into a slow-moving clogged artery, waste of an additional 35 minutes of time going one way. So Costco, where I’ve shopped since it first opened as Price Club in San Diego in the 70’s, will now join the ranks of my nostalgic entities killed by Bend’s never-ending thirst for “affordable housing†which equates to an additional 70 housing units for each 30 units built. Not that I think Costco will miss me. But it will greatly limit my Trader Joe’s, Olive Garden, Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Pet Smart visits as there is already too much traffic in that corridor. Those businesses will miss me.
