The Skyliner's Art Sale, featuring pieces by local artists, will be going on throughout Memorial Day weekend.
Whether you’re looking for documentaries about a stroke-survivor turned adventurer, a discussion about barns or a zine workshop, Central Oregon never disappoints. The area always has something new to do or experience. Below are a few events that stand out this week.
“Dream Boldly: The Grand AdvenChairâ€
Local Bend adventurer Geoff Babb, a survivor of two strokes, takes years to perfect an all-terrain, human-powered wheelchair, culminating in a four-day expedition down and back out of the Grand Canyon. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with AdvenChair visionary Babb, director Marcia Volk and other members of the project. There will be drinks for sale.
Thursday 5:30 p.m.; $10; The Belfry, 302 E. Main Ave., Sisters; or 541-815-9122.
Tuesday 5:30-7:30 p.m.; $10; Open Space Event Studios, 220 NE Lafayette Ave., Bend; openspace.studio or 541-410-5866.
Skyliner’s Art Sale
Head up Skyliners Road for an art sale featuring local artists. Local artists will be selling their creations over Memorial Day weekend.
Friday through Sunday 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Monday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; free; 16250 Skyliners Road, Bend; 541-390-3863.
Zine Making Workshop
2024 Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture resident artist Atif Akin will lead a one-day zine making workshop. A zine is a self-published, often low-cost and lo-fi, non-commercial publication that is easy to distribute in local circles. Participants will use collage, print and saddle stitch binding to create their zines. They are encouraged to bring their own visual source material, such as old magazines, photo albums or record covers.
Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; $20; Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture, 68467 Three Creek Road, Sisters; or 541-904-0700.
A Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Barns
Michael Houser, barn expert and manager of Washington State’s award-winning Heritage Barn Program, will talk through the history of barns in the Pacific Northwest. His practical field guide lecture draws on his vast knowledge. Audience members will learn about the many parts of a barn, how to identify and date various barn types, and different construction methods, from heavy timber and logs to laminated beams and various truss systems. This event is eligible for a History Pub Stamp.
Tuesday 7 p.m.; free with registration; McMenamins Old St. Francis School, Father Luke’s Room, 700 NW Bond St., Bend; or 541-382-5174.
