Lori Chavez-DeRemer announced Thursday that she will run for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, which includes much of Bend and Redmond.
Chavez-DeRemer was elected to a two-year term after a tight race in 2022. Her win made her the first Republican woman to represent Oregon in the U.S. House and helped tip the chamber to Republican control.
“I love representing my fellow Oregonians, and I’m excited to announce that I’m running for re-election so I can continue serving my community,†said Chavez-DeRemer in a news release. “When I first took office, I promised to work towards pragmatic solutions to improve public safety, support our farmers and ranchers, and build an economy that makes life more affordable for hardworking families — and I’ve kept my promise ... I’m just getting started.â€
Three Democrats have already said they will challenge DeRemer, including Jamie McLeod Skinner of Crooked River Ranch, who lost to Chavez-DeRemer in 2022. Oregon House Rep. Janelle Bynum and Oregon Metro Council President Lynn Peterson are also competing in the Democratic primary, as is Salem resident Kevin Easton.
Chavez-DeRemer has nearly $1.3 million in cash on hand. In the third quarter of this year, she raised more than all three of her Democratic opponents combined.
