Ridgeview’s Kensey Gault, center, clears the last hurdle in the lead to the finish of the girls 100-meter hurdles during the 5A IMC Championships on May 11 at Summit High School in Bend.
Central Oregon had two track and field athletes finish in the top five in the championship division of their events at the Nike Outdoor Nationals this week at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Summit’s Hayden Boaz finished third in the boys 5,000-meter run and Ridgeview’s Kensey Gault took fourth in the girls heptathlon.
It was a tight race in the 5,000. Boaz, who just wrapped up his junior track season, finished in 14 minutes, 32.59 seconds, just behind winner Riku Sugie of Thomas Nelson in Kentucky (14.28.63), and Crater’s Tayvon Kitchen (14:31.47).
Gault, who won the girls 100-meter hurdles at the state championships just a few weeks ago, had three top-fives in the seven-discipline heptathlon. She finished second in the 200 (25.16), third in the shot put (34 feet, 11.25 inches) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.10). All three marks were personal records.
The heptathlon, contested over two days, also includes the high jump, long jump, javelin and 800.
