A walk up and down any public driving range in Central Oregon will reveal a wide array of swings, abilities, and equipment. Some of the golfers a person is likely to encounter are seasoned die-hards who are working on something specific with their swing. Others might be rank beginners, or a couple just out to hit balls and enjoy some fresh air.
Even though these golfers are at the course for different experiences, one thing most of them have in common is that they are probably playing with equipment that does not fit their specific needs. In other words, they never got a proper club fitting.
“Club fitting is the process of determining the proper equipment specifications for a golfer,†says Andy Heinly, owner of Parscription Golf in Bend. “Club fitting is just as important for the beginner as it is for the professional. Properly fitted clubs allow golfers to get the most out of their ability.â€
Jason Owens, Master Club Fitter at True Spec Golf at Pronghorn, agrees. He says that playing clubs that are not properly fitted can negatively affect a golfer’s skill development, and even create bad habits that prevent them from getting the most out of their game.
The club fitting process has come a long way with advances in technology and the availability of real-time feedback. At both Parscription Golf and True Spec, club fittings consider factors like wrist-to-floor measurement, clubhead speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin, shot shape, club path, face angle, and countless others.
Both Heinly and Owens recognize that the club fitting experience can be intimidating for golfers that have never been through it before. The vast amount of information and technical terms can be overwhelming. That’s why they start each fitting with an interview to get to know a golfer on a personal level. They inquire about the golfer’s background, ability, goals, personal preferences, potential physical limitations, and budget.
From there, the process continues with golfers hitting balls, either with their own clubs, or a club the fitter has built for them. As they move through the warmup process, the club fitter will collect and analyze pertinent shot data. The fitter will then build a club that matches the golfer’s specifications and swing.
Throughout the process, it’s important for the golfer to communicate with the fitter about what they like and dislike. It may not be the case that the first club a golfer tries is the one that is best for them. Often times, they need to test out several different club and shaft combinations before they find one that fits their game and with which they are comfortable. Having proper golf clubs is essential for achieving top performance and enjoyment.
“Golf clubs can influence someone’s golf game both negatively and positively,†Heinly says. “Having equipment that best fits the individual gives them the best chance to learn and enjoy a game that is one of the most difficult to learn.â€
