Lava Bears teammates celebrate Addisen Fisher's home run Friday during the 5A softball quarterfinal game at Bend High School. Bend High won 8-1 to advance to the semifinals on Tuesday.
For the third time in as many years, the Bend High softball team has advanced to the state semifinals.
With five home runs, the Lava Bears powered their way past No. 7 Wilsonville with an 8-1 in the Class 5A quarterfinals and into a matchup against No. 4 Lebanon with a spot in the state championship on the line on Tuesday.
The game started with fireworks when the Lava Bears hit not one, but two two-run home runs in the top of the opening frame.
Senior Addisen Fisher hit the first of her two home runs in the first, then two batters later, junior Taylor Aldrich launched a two-run shot to give Bend the commanding four-run lead.
But the Lava Bears weren’t done launching balls over the fence. Senior Jet Hovey hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Fisher hit her second home run in the fifth inning then freshman Cassidy Sandgren capped the home run derby with a solo shot in the sixth.
Even though Bend hit five home runs, the first two-run shot was really all that was needed with Fisher pitching in the circle.
The senior was dominant against the Wildcats, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out 15 in a complete game effort.
Class 5A quarterfinals
No. 4 Lebanon 7, No. 5 Caldera 5: Trailing 7-0 after four innings, the Caldera softball, fresh off its first playoff win earlier in the week, mounted a late rally on the road against No. 4 Lebanon, last year’s state runner-up.
But the rally came up just two runs short, and the Wolfpack’s season came to a close with a 7-5 loss.
With a three-run home run in the fifth inning and two-run long ball in the seventh, junior Morgan Voll drove in all five runs for the Wolfpack. Senior Emma Miller finished with two hits (one double) and scored two runs.
But Lebanon’s Tatum Cole was just too powerful. The sophomore pitched a complete game and stuck out 17 Caldera batters to send the Warriors to semifinals to face No. 1 Dallas.
Class 4A quarterfinals
No. 1 Henley 7, No. 9 Crook County 3
Senior Tylee Cossitt hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, but it was not enough for the Cowgirls to pull the upset over No. 1 Henley in Klamath Falls.
The Hornets scored seven in the first four innings to build a comfortable lead, especially with how Annie Campos was pitching. The senior pitched 6â…” innings and struck out 14 Cowgirl hitters, all while giving up only two hits.
